Shea Powell Design has worked with the San Diego African American Museum of Fine Arts (SDAAMFA) to promote and design many of their indoor and outdoor exhibits.
San Diego’s Lost Neighborhoods Exhibit
I was hired by SDAAMFA, in partnership with the San Diego History Center (SDHC), to design an exhibit on San Diego’s Lost Neighborhoods. “This immersive exhibition sheds light on historic communities displaced or erased by discriminatory practices such as redlining and freeway construction.” Students from the University of California San Diego did the first phase of research for the exhibit. I was tasked with researching additional documents to support the exhibit (in partnership with staff at the SDHC), creating an overarching narrative (in partnership with staff at the SDAAMFA), and designing all aspects of the exhibit. I handed over final artwork to the SDHC and the SDAAMFA who wrote the image references and detail copy, coordinated printing all of the photos and banners, and hung the exhibit. If you would like a behind the scenes look at the details I put into exhibit design, click here to view the google document I created for the museums to implement the exhibit.
